RAILWAY 200 – CELEBRATING 200 YEARS OF THE MODERN RAILWAY

Railway 200 is a year-long nationwide partnership-led campaign to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway and inspire a new generation of young pioneering talent to choose a career in rail. It invites community, rail and other groups to get involved.

Paddle Steamer Waverley was built for the London & North Eastern Railway which was one of Britain’s ‘big four’ railway companies, created by the 1923 grouping of smaller companies on a geographical basis. Waverley was the last railway steamer to be built before nationalisation came in 1948. During Waverley’s pre-preservation career from 1947 to 1972 she was based at Craigendoran Pier where trains would bring passengers from Glasgow to join the steamers.

In 2025 Waverley will offer the opportunity to connect with several heritage railways around the UK. Look out for special cruises which connect with the

  • West Somerset Railway
  • Brecon Mountain Railway
  • Lynton & Barnstaple Railway
  • Dartmouth Steam Railway
  • Swanage Railway
  • Isle of Wight Steam Railway
