Paddle Steamer Waverley is a National Treasure, lovingly cared for by a team of professionals and volunteers. From the earliest days of Waverley’s preservation, volunteers have played a key role in ensuring the continued operation of the ship. There are a number of ways in which you can contribute, both ashore and afloat and there are opportunities for people from all walks of life which will help the Waverley Charity fulfil its objectives. If you have the time we can put your skills to good use!

2021 / 22 Winter Varnishing Volunteers

We are looking to recruit volunteers who are keen to help restore Waverley’s deck seating back to its former glory this coming winter. Getting Waverley’s woodwork to the highest possible standard that is deserving of an iconic ship in her 75th anniversary season will be a time consuming job, but many hands make light work!

Before Waverley returned to service in 2021 her deck crew spent time stripping and re-varnishing the whole of the front of the Bridge as well as the Bridge Dodgers, this has resulted in a fantastic finish looking like new. Can you help us achieve the same finish on other woodwork, in particular the wooden seating around the deck shelters and on the upper deck?

In addition we would welcome anybody who has joinery skills as we could put them to really good use.

During the winter Waverley berths at the Glasgow Science Centre and is usually open several days a week for much of the winter period. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to offer help please email info@waverleyexcursions.co.uk or speak to the Chief Officer the next time you are aboard.

Training will be provided as well as any necessary Safety Equipment.

We need your help with:

Winter Maintenance: Engineers, Electricians, Plumbers, Joiners etc.

Pier Hosting: Meet & greet passengers.

Distribution: Deliver publicity material in your local area.

Onboard: Shop Assistant, Ad Hoc help.

Volunteering aboard Waverley allows you to meet new friends, gain self confidence and be a part of your community. It can be a rewarding way to spend your free time or retirement. It can also be an exciting chance to develop existing skills and gain new ones; for some it can be a great opportunity to add experience to CVs and future job applications.

To register your interest in volunteering please email contact details, area and skill to info@waverleyexcursions.co.uk. You can also write to: Waverley Excursions Ltd, 36 Lancefield Quay, Glasgow G3 8HA.
