Job Opportunity Aboard Paddle Steamer Waverley

We are searching for a qualified 2nd Engineer / EOOW (Steam) to join Waverley for the 2026 sailing season. This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate who holds a Steam Certificate of Competency. This position would require working for some of the season to fit into a back to back rota. In return we can offer a competitive daily rate of pay. There is an opportunity to appoint a full time 2nd Engineer to sail much of the season and undertake winter refit work in the off season.

Candidates Must Possess:

  • Minimum EOOW (Steam) CoC
  • hold all relevant STCW qualifications including:
    • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats
    • Personal Survival Techniques
    • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
    • Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting (PAFF)
    • Elementary First Aid (EFA)
    • Security Duties
    • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
  • ENG1 Medical issued by relevant UK Authority or recognised equivalent
  • The right to work in the UK

Job Description

Responsible to the Chief Engineer for:

  • Complying with Chief Engineer’s Standing Orders,
  • Complying with instructions regarding watch keeping / planned maintenance / repair work
  • Comply with the SMS
  • Instructing and organising Engine Room Ratings
  • Recording all duties, planned maintenance work and repairs undertake and reporting them
  • Carrying out responsibilities and emergency duties prescribed on the Muster List
  • Accounting to for spare parts used, stocks remaining to facilitate timely ordering or replacements
  • Supervising of fuelling and the transferring of oils either on board or ashore for disposal.

Overview

Waverley is the last seagoing paddle steamer in the World. In 2026 she will operate in several areas around the UK offering day, afternoon and evening cruises. The Engine Room team play a vital role in ensuring Waverley is able to operate her planned programme of cruises. Uniquely the Engine Room crew will engage with passengers given Waverley’s open Engine Room.

This position provides an opportunity to play a key role in operating a unique and famous vessel with triple expansion steam machinery.
