Seasonal Job Opportunity Aboard Paddle Steamer Waverley
We are seeking to appoint a Second Officer for the 2026 season. The successful candidate will support the Master and Chief Officer in the operation of Waverley.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced officer or someone looking to progress their career. As a passenger excursion vessel operating in many coastal waters around the UK Waverley will provide a unique challenge.
We would welcome applicants who have experience in a role on other passenger vessels. In return a competitive daily rate of pay will be offered.
Candidates will Possess:
- Merchant Shipping Certificates:
- COC – OOW Deck
- Training in GMDSS Radiocommunications
- Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats
- Proficiency in Medical First Aid aboard Ship
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
- Elementary First Aid (EFA)
- Security Awareness (SA)
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
- ENG1 Medical issued by relevant UK Authority or recognised equivalent
Right to work in the UK.
Job Description
The Second Officer is responsible to the Master for:
- The safe navigation and conduct of the vessel in all respects when duty officer of the watch (OOW)
- The maintaining and updating of all nautical publications and charts with special regard to all current Notices to Mariners
- Ensuring the maintenance and careful use of all navigational equipment and instrumentation, both conventional and electronic
- Passage planning (in conjunction with the Master) for coastal voyages between operational districts
- Ensuring that Medical Lockers and First Aid Boxes are correctly stocked
- Carrying out the responsibilities and emergency duties prescribed on the Muster List
- Carrying out ‘Duty Night Officer Duties’ as required
- Any other duties required of them by the Master or Chief Officer
- The Second Officer should understudy the role of Chief Officer and be prepared to act for the Chief Officer in the event of their incapacity.
Overview
Waverley is the last seagoing paddle steamer in the World. In 2026 she will operate in several areas around the UK offering day, afternoon and evening cruises. Much of her trading is coastal in estuaries and river channels. The Second Officer plays a key role navigating the vessel with the opportunity to develop ship handling skills.
This position provides an opportunity to play a key role in operating a unique and famous vessel.
