Paddle Steamer Waverley is seeking an experienced marine professional to join the organisation as its new Operations Director, offering a unique opportunity to lead the safe operation, maintenance and long-term preservation of the World’s last seagoing paddle steamer.

Based in Glasgow and working both ashore and onboard the historic vessel, the successful candidate will take responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of Waverley, overseeing everything from engineering and maintenance to annual refits and regulatory compliance.

The role represents a rare opportunity for an experienced Technical Superintendent or marine operations professional to play a leading role in preserving one of Scotland’s most recognisable vessels, ensuring Waverley continues to operate cruises from ports and piers around the UK each year.

Waverley in Dry Dock.

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Operations Director will work closely with Waverley’s Master, Chief Engineer, crew and shore-based team to plan and deliver the vessel’s annual refit, manage technical projects and maintain the highest standards of safety and operational excellence.

Paul Semple, General Manager of Waverley Excursions, said: “This is an exceptional opportunity to join a passionate team responsible for operating one of the world’s most famous historic ships. Waverley is unlike any other vessel, and we’re looking for someone who combines strong technical expertise with leadership skills and a genuine passion for maintaining this remarkable piece of maritime heritage for future generations. This opportunity has arisen due to the retirement of our current Operations Director who has offered fantastic service to Waverley over the past nine years.”

Waverley’s funnels being placed back on board after major works to reboiler the ship.

Applicants should hold an MCA Certificate of Competency, ideally with Chief Engineer experience, together with experience of dry docking, refits and capital projects. Experience of steamships, Designated Person Ashore responsibilities and commercial contract management would also be advantageous.

Waverley, which celebrates the 80th anniversary of her launch this year, operates cruises around the UK from May to October before returning to Glasgow each winter for maintenance and refit work.

Salary is negotiable depending on experience, with pension contributions and an attractive holiday allowance.

Applications are now open. Anyone interested in applying for the position of Operations Director should send a CV and covering letter outlining their relevant experience to info@waverleyexcursions.co.uk.

Today marks a significant maritime milestone, exactly 100 years since the launch of the pioneering turbine steamer TS King George V. Launched on 29th April 1926, the much-loved “KGV” became a familiar and cherished sight on Scotland’s west coast, initially serving Inveraray before becoming a mainstay of Oban-based cruising from 1935. From there, she sailed iconic routes to Mull, Iona, Staffa and Fort William, creating lasting memories for generations of passengers before her withdrawal in 1974.

Now, a century on from her launch, history is set to come full circle. From Tuesday 12th to Tuesday 19th May, the World’s last seagoing paddle steamer, Waverley, returns to Oban to recreate these historic sailings, offering passengers the chance to experience the same breathtaking routes once operated by King George V.

Waverley’s Oban and Inner Hebrides timetable mirrors the golden era of steam travel, with cruises to Mull, Staffa, Iona and Fort William, bringing the spirit of the “KGV” back to life for a new generation.

On Saturday 16th May, passengers can cruise through the Sound of Mull to the picturesque village of Tobermory for time ashore, or sail round to Mull’s west coast, passing Ulva and Little Colonsay before cruising around Staffa to view the dramatic Fingal’s Cave.

On Sunday 17th May, Waverley offers a spectacular sailing via the Sound of Luing to Crinan, passing through the Gulf of Corryvreckan to view the famous whirlpool, Scarba and the Isles of the Sea, before returning to Oban via the Kerrera Sound. That evening, a special cruise will see Waverley steam up Loch Linnhe and through the Corran Narrows to Fort William, where she will anchor and passengers will be tendered ashore.

On Monday 18th May, the steamer cruises through Kerrera Sound and along the Mull coastline to the sacred Isle of Iona, offering time ashore to explore. The grand finale on Tuesday 19th May features a cruise across the Firth of Lorn to Mull and the village of Salen, with the option to visit Tobermory or remain onboard for an extended scenic voyage past Ardnamurchan Lighthouse and mainland Britain’s westernmost point, before viewing the Small Isle of Muck and circumnavigating the Isle of Eigg. Seniors can bring a friend FREE from Oban on this final sailing.

This special series of sailings offers not only outstanding coastal scenery but also a rare opportunity to relive a defining chapter of west coast maritime history.

Bookings are now open with tickets available from waverleyexcursions.co.uk or by calling the booking office on 0141 243 2224.

Waverley burns Marine Gas Oil (MGO) which heats the water in her twin boilers to generate steam, the steam is then used to drive her engine and turn the paddles. MGO is also used to create electrical power across the ship.

Over the past few weeks we have been closely monitoring the price of MGO ahead of Waverley’s 2026 summer season. Unfortunately we are now facing a severe price increase of over 65% compared to 2025. This level of increase is more than we can possibly bear or we will face the reality of not being able to meet the cost of the 2026-27 winter refit and dry docking.

Reluctantly, we have therefore had to introduce a modest Fuel Surcharge to partly meet the increased cost of fuel. The Fuel Surcharge will be introduced from Tuesday 14th April and will have two levels. A Fuel Surcharge of £2 will be applicable on Adult or Senior Fares under £45, or £4 on Adult and Senior Fares set at £45 or over. No Fuel Surcharge will be applicable on Child or Dog fares.

Key Fuel Price Figures:

  • At today’s price it will cost £13 PER MINUTE in fuel to sail Waverley (she is in steam for about 10-12 hours per day);
  • Fuel cost increase of over £3,000 PER DAY compared to 2025;
  • Fuel cost increase of £400,000 across the 2026 season;
  • An average ticket fare will afford us to purchase less than 4 minutes worth of fuel.

In addition to fuel costs there are many other costs associated with operating Waverley including berthing charges, crew wages, waste disposal, insurance, maintenance and marketing to meet. We will therefore put Waverley’s operation at risk if we cannot increase income to partly meet the increased cost of fuel.

The Fuel Surcharge will be kept under review as the season progresses and will be amended if the cost of fuel changes significantly.

We would warmly welcome donations from those who hold Sailing Passes, Go Anywhere Vouchers and Life Commodore Tickets since these have been sold without any Fuel Surcharge being taken into account.

We hope our customers and loyal supporters will appreciate the very difficult situation we now face in affording the fuel to operate Waverley this coming season which starts on Friday 8th May. Bookings are now open for all sailings up to Tuesday 22nd September. The London & Thames 2026 Timetable will be published soon.

After being berthed in Greenock’s James Watt Dock since 16th February Waverley was moved the short distance to Garvel Dry Dock on Friday 20th March to allow for her annual out-of-the-water inspection.

During her current visit to dry dock she is accompanied by the Caledonian MacBrayne vessel Lochinvar with Waverley being positioned further in the dock with Lochinvar astern of her. It is expected that Waverley will be in dry dock for around 2 weeks with a list of items to attend to including opening her hull up to allow for the removal of large pieces of equipment associated with the old sprinkler system and the installation of new water tanks and other equipment for the new water mist system.

This dry docking will also see a new port side spring beam fitted to the paddlebox. This large greenheart timber beam is 26ft in length and supports part of the paddle wheel as well as providing some ‘give’ when the ship is berthing. The current beam has been in place for some years and is not showing signs of weakness.

Waverley’s hull will be washed down and fully inspected prior to receiving a full coat of new paint. The final two new Dining Saloon windows will be installed before she returns to the James Watt Dock for final refit work.

During the dry docking it is expected that over £300,000 of works will be undertaken on what is normally the since largest spend item during the winter refit, although this year around £0.5 million is being spent to replace the sprinkler system. The cost of these works is being met by Waverley’s owning Charity and the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society.

Over a two day period (19th & 20th February) both of Waverley’s masts were removed from the ship as her winter refit gathers pace.

Waverley moved from Glasgow under her own power on Monday 16th February, firstly sailing down river turning at the Tail of the Bank before berthing at Greenock’s Custom House Quay. Waverley was then moved by tugs from the Custom House to the James Watt Dock to berth within Dales Marine Services shipyard facility.

Since arriving in Greenock work has progressed well with the internal removal of deck head panels in the Jeanie Deans Lounge and Dining Saloon to allow access for removing the old pipes that form the fire sprinkler system.

The mainmast was lifted off the ship on Thursday 19th February with the foremast removed on Friday 20th February. In the coming days strip out work will continue with the removal of old copper pipe work. Fifteen Dining Saloon windows will be replaced following a highly successful public appeal to raise funds for new masts and windows.

Waverley is expected to move into Garvel dry dock in mid-March for her annual out of the water inspection. During dry dock a section of the hull will be cut open and removed to allow for tanks to be swapped out as part of fitting the new sprinkler system.

The current winter refit is anticipated to cost over £1.5m given the extent of refurbishment works being carried out. This work is being funded by Waverley’s owning charity, the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and donations from many supporters.

Watch a historic milestone for Paddle Steamer Waverley as she returned to steam today for the first time in 2026. This is the earliest she has been in full steam ready to sail in any calendar year this century.

After her Winter rest, the World’s last seagoing paddle steamer has stirred back into life today as our winter refit team raised the boilers back to full steam pressure. Her mighty triple-expansion steam engine was slowly turned, the air pump and feed pumps have been operated, the newly refurbished capstan tested and her whistle sounded letting those near by know she is back in steam.

Extensive preparations are now underway ahead of her sailing to Greenock. Given the level of work to be undertaken at the shipyard most internal areas have been cleared of furniture and fittings with the deck and flooring in passenger areas covered for protection.

During the next two months Waverley will see extensive refit work undertaken, this includes:

• Replacement of her fire sprinkler system

• Removal and renewal of both masts

• Replacement of the dining saloon windows

• Her annual dry docking survey

• Hull repaint

• Replacement of the port side spring beam

• Steel renewals in the paddleboxes.

This early start reflects a substantial investment in the ship’s fabric and safety systems to help ensure Waverley continues sailing for future generations to experience and enjoy.

Thanks to the exceptional generosity of so many individuals Waverley’s Masts & Windows Winter Appeal has now raised over £100,000 – this is truly fantastic and we are very grateful to everyone that has donated.

Donations are still being received daily so we are hopeful of reaching the £135,000 target in the coming weeks. Some of the money donated has already been put to use as we have paid for the new window frames which are being produced by Roundstone Joinery based near the market town of Arundel in West Sussex. They were chosen at the suggestion of the long term Waverley supporter who built the current windows over 30 years ago. That same supporter is liaising and overseeing production of the new windows to ensure the same high quality on Waverley’s new windows.

We are now expecting the new windows to arrive in Glasgow by the end of January so that our dedicated varnishing volunteers can get to work, each window will receive many coats of varnish to help protect them from the harsh environment of constant sea water and paddle spray attack!

Donations to the Masts & Windows Winter Appeal can be made online or by calling the office on 0141 243 2224.

All donations small or large will be most welcome, if you can Gift Aid your donation this will add 25p to every £1 donated. All donations can be acknowledged on the Virtual Donor Wall.

The Masts & Windows Winter Appeal has topped £75,000 in less than two weeks since the appeal was launched demonstrating the fantastic level of support for Waverley. The Virtual Donor Wall is now well populated on our website and shows the extensive number of individuals who are supporting this appeal.

The appeal was launched on 5th December to raise funds to meet the cost of replacing both of Waverley’s timber masts and thirteen of the Dining Saloon windows. The main mast fractured during the final sailing of the 2025 season and the decision has been taken to also replace the fore mast given it has several cracks developing. Waverley’s current Dining Saloon windows were first installed in 1995 and most are now urgently needing replaced. Replacing the windows involves removing the panelling on the ship’s side, taking out the old frames and carrying out steel repairs before installing the new frames. This work is labour intensive and therefore costly to undertake.

We are delighted to announce that we have appointed Isle Ewe Boats Ltd in collaboration with Johnson & Loftus to produce and oversee the installation of two new masts on Waverley.

Isle Ewe Boats Ltd is a boat yard run by traditional boat builder Alasdair Grant on the island of Isle of Ewe, found just off the west coast of Scottish Highlands in Loch Ewe. They specialise in traditional new builds, replicas and have extensive experience of producing masts.

Isle Ewe Boats commented “We are delighted to get to contribute to the upkeep of Waverley. A remarkably ship that always makes the effort to visit the Highlands, so it will be great to assist in keeping her in her usual top condition for summer sailings to come.”

Meanwhile other winter refit work on the ship has continued to progress with the main engine survey work now complete. The Medium Pressure connecting rod is now reconnected to the crankshaft. The air pump has also been reassembled following its full survey.

Work has paused for the Christmas break and will restart on Monday 5th January. Waverley is due to move to Greenock in mid-February for work to progress to replace the fire sprinkler system.

An appeal has been launched to raise £135,000 to replace Waverley’s two timber masts and most of the Dining Saloon windows ahead of the 2026 sailing season.

Following an end of season inspection the decision was taken that both masts and thirteen Dining Saloon windows must be replaced. These traditional features are central to Waverley’s distinctive profile, and renewing them in authentic materials is essential to preserving the ship’s historic character and renewed appearance.

A fracture on the main mast occurred on the final sailing of 2025 which led to the upper section being removed, Waverley then completed the season looking a little sorry for herself. The fore mast has since been fully inspected and found to have several cracks extending up the 17m mast although not individually deep collectively they show the mast is aging. It has though given great service to the ship having been fitted back in 2003 during the second phase of the Heritage Rebuild.

Paul Semple, Waverley’s General Manager, explains the importance the ships authentic preservation: “Essentially, many parts of Waverley could be replaced with more modern materials and fittings which may last longer, but collectively that would change the look and feel of the ship. Preserving Waverley is about maintaining her as far as is possible as she was intended to be. We are preserving her truly unique character. As the world continuously changes around Waverley she becomes even more special as she represents a moment in time when she was first designed and built.”

Throughout Waverley’s preservation career many refurbishments have been undertaken, though it has not always been possible to fully preserve her original 1947 character. Waverley’s owning charity remains fully committed to maintaining her traditional style wherever possible, even though it is rarely the most cost-efficient route.

Waverley’s 2025–26 winter refit is now well underway, with essential maintenance and several major investment projects in progress. This includes replacing the fire sprinkler system and renewing the port paddlebox spring beam, these two works alone will cost over £500,000 and are being jointly funded by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and Waverley’s owning charity. This winter’s refit was already shaping up to be expensive, but with the addition costs of both masts and the Dining Saloon windows the total cost will now be over £1.5 million.

To allow the work on Waverley’s masts and windows to be completed by March 2026, Waverley’s supporters are being asked to help raise £135,000. All donations, large or small, are warmly welcomed. Contributions will help prepare Waverley for the 2026 season, during which she will proudly mark the 80th anniversary of her launch.

Donations can be made online or by contacting Waverley’s Booking Office on 0141 243 2224 (Mon–Thur 9:30am-4:30pm, Fri 9:30an-4pm).

Everyone that donates can opt to be included on our Virtual Donor Wall. Everyone the donates by 1st March 2026 will automatically be entered into our Donor’s Draw to win either a visit to Waverley during the refit, a Sailing Pass for 2026, an invitation to cruise and visit the bridge as well as other prizes. Those who donate at least £100 will receive a specially produced LNER styled A4 poster just for those who donate to the Masts & Windows Winter Appeal. Those who donate £250 or more will receive an invitation for a cruise in 2026 and a small section of mast removed from Waverley as a keepsake.

Waverley’s 2025 season came to a close on Sunday evening (19th October) after the final passengers disembarked.

In total 161,950 passenger journeys were recorded over 123 operating days – the largest total number of passengers recorded since 1996!

We would like to express a sincere “Thank You” to everyone that sailed and supported Waverley this season.

Like many seasons there were a few operational challenges to contend with – notably the weather in the second half of the 2025 season caused some cruises to be cancelled or amended.

However, it was due to the weather that Waverley found herself paddling all the way round Great Britain in 2025 much to the surprise of many. Although her extended journey from Ayr to Dartmouth back in late August came with increased cost it did bring the benefit of much media attention and publicity to many individuals who were unaware of Waverley or who hadn’t realised she is in fact still operating.

This season saw the ship celebrate her 50th anniversary since her very first cruise in preservation back in 1975. It is truly remarkable that this anniversary was reached and even more so we are now looking forward to the 80th anniversary since the ship’s launch next October.

During the 2025 season Waverley called at 69 ports or piers which included three that were visited for the very first time – Carbost, Salen and Rochester. A far cry from what she was built to do all those years ago.

Since Waverley tied up for winter just two days ago the crew have been busy de-storing the ship and clearing her for winter layup. In the coming months maintenance and survey work will take priority before she moves to Dales Marine shipyard in Greenock sometime in February.

A major capital renewal project will take place this winter as we look forward to ensuring she can continue to operate such extensive summer seasons well into the future. This winter we will be removing the current sprinkler system which was installed during Phase 1 of the Heritage Rebuild back in 2000. A new system will then be installed, the cost of this project alone will be over £400,000, with the full winter cost expected to easily exceed £1.3 million.

On Saturday 13th September Waverley took part in a steam ship parade as she steamed side by side with Shieldhall through the eastern Solent.

Waverley’s schedule for the day incorporated sufficient time to allow the two Clyde built steam ships, with a combined age of 148 years, to sail together for almost one hour giving passengers on each vessel the ideal viewing platform to watch and wave to the other.

By 4pm Shieldhall was in position setting a straight course from the Forts due west. Waverley having been to off Bembridge on the far east of the Isle of Wight came steaming up at full speed. With her passengers all on deck to see Shieldhall Waverley duly announced her arrival at the event with Shieldhall responding in similar fashion.

To begin with Waverley steamed down Shieldhall’s starboard side paddling ahead and then falling in behind her. Waverley then steamed down Shieldhall’s port side giving passengers on both sides of each vessel the opportunity to see the other steamer.

Seafin (1961) operated by Seafin Luxury Charters and Solent Cat (2000) operated by Solent Cruises also took part with each taking turns to steam between Waverley and Shieldhall giving their respective passengers views at close quarters.

After much tooting and waving there was one more addition to the event in the form of a coastguard helicopter which flew close above Shieldhall to conduct a training exercise much to the pleasure of passengers aboard Shieldhall. After about 50 minutes it was time for Waverley to set course for Yarmouth while Shieldhall made her way directly back to her home berth in Southampton Docks.

The special sailing and ‘steam together’ event was the finale to a special year for Shieldhall which celebrated her 70th Anniversary. Originally built to carry treated sewage from Shieldhall and Dalmuir down the River Clyde for disposal in deeper waters around Garroch Head Shieldhall has now been operated in preservation for over 30 years – a longer period of time than her original function. Like Waverley, Shieldhall relies on generous supporters to help keep her in steam and operating. Unlike Waverley, Shieldhall is entirely run by volunteers and will operate for around 25-30 days a year. Further details on Shieldhall can be found on her website.

Some images kindly provided by Andrew Cooke capturing the special event.
