PADDLE STEAMER WAVERLEY SEEKS NEW OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

Paddle Steamer Waverley is seeking an experienced marine professional to join the organisation as its new Operations Director, offering a unique opportunity to lead the safe operation, maintenance and long-term preservation of the World’s last seagoing paddle steamer.

Based in Glasgow and working both ashore and onboard the historic vessel, the successful candidate will take responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of Waverley, overseeing everything from engineering and maintenance to annual refits and regulatory compliance.

The role represents a rare opportunity for an experienced Technical Superintendent or marine operations professional to play a leading role in preserving one of Scotland’s most recognisable vessels, ensuring Waverley continues to operate cruises from ports and piers around the UK each year.

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Operations Director will work closely with Waverley’s Master, Chief Engineer, crew and shore-based team to plan and deliver the vessel’s annual refit, manage technical projects and maintain the highest standards of safety and operational excellence.

Paul Semple, General Manager of Waverley Excursions, said: “This is an exceptional opportunity to join a passionate team responsible for operating one of the world’s most famous historic ships. Waverley is unlike any other vessel, and we’re looking for someone who combines strong technical expertise with leadership skills and a genuine passion for maintaining this remarkable piece of maritime heritage for future generations. This opportunity has arisen due to the retirement of our current Operations Director who has offered fantastic service to Waverley over the past nine years.”

Applicants should hold an MCA Certificate of Competency, ideally with Chief Engineer experience, together with experience of dry docking, refits and capital projects. Experience of steamships, Designated Person Ashore responsibilities and commercial contract management would also be advantageous.

Waverley, which celebrates the 80th anniversary of her launch this year, operates cruises around the UK from May to October before returning to Glasgow each winter for maintenance and refit work.

Salary is negotiable depending on experience, with pension contributions and an attractive holiday allowance.

Applications are now open. Anyone interested in applying for the position of Operations Director should send a CV and covering letter outlining their relevant experience to info@waverleyexcursions.co.uk.
