Over the past two weeks work abroad Waverley has continued at pace with several contractors aboard in addition to Waverley’s engineering team.
Tasks underway include:
- Replacing Boiler Burners – the new burners have been delivered and are now on both boilers. Work continues to fit all mechanical components ahead of electrical installation works.
- Electrical Distribution Boards – this winter three distribution boards are being replaced in total, these are in the Galley, Lower Bar and Purser’s Office. All three are now complete.
- Forward Deck Shelter Windows – several windows had steel corrosion under the wooden frames. The steel has been cropped out and is in the process of being replaced.
- Built in Fridge & Freezer – the compressors and evaporators in both units have been replaced. The previous parts were installed during Waverley’s heritage rebuild in 2000 but were reaching the end of their serviceable lifespan.
- Deck Timber Works – over 200m of decking has now been refitted on the Promenade Deck. Caulking of new timbers continues.
- MCA Survey Works – survey work has been carried out on Waverley’s main engine (High Pressure Cylinder), the Forward Feed Pump and Starboard Paddle Shaft.
- Deck Seat Varnishing – our volunteers are making excellent progress with stripping and sanding deck seats at The Tall Ship workshop facility adjacent to the Riverside Museum. Varnishing will start shortly.
Much of the costly winter work outlined above will go unnoticed to many passengers but is vital to keep Waverley operating. In total it is expected that over £1 million will be spent directly on the ship during the current winter period.
Waverley is due to be dry-docked in April ahead of her first public sailing of 2025 on Friday 16th May. We are working to release the 2025 Timetable area-by-area from February. Bookings will open after the timetables are released.
