Birth of a Legend – An extended edition incorporating Waverley’s Heritage Rebuild and 2020 Boiler Refit

This remarkable collection of photographs shows the development of paddle steamer Waverley from her build, including her Heritage Rebuild 2000-2003, as well as her Boiler Refit in 2020.

This photographic record of her build was originally published in 1987 to mark the 40th Anniversary of Waverley’s maiden voyage. The original negatives of Waverley’s build have been in the possession of Mr Eric Armstrong, a former member of the ship’s crew.

In 2022, Waverley celebrates 75 years since her maiden voyage and this updated edition has been extended to include the Heritage Rebuild which was undertaken in two phases (2000 and 2003), as well as her Boiler Refit in 2020.

Life Aboard Waverley – Reflections as a crew member in 1967

Life aboard Waverley by Eric Armstrong is a peep into the past to the pre-preservation Waverley in the late 1960’s, some 55 years ago when life in the West of Scotland was very different and the lives and background of the crew can now be seen as a window on the social history of the time.

All monies raised through sales of this publication will go directly towards Waverley’s ongoing preservation.

Re-boilering a National Treasure

Waverley’s boiler refit took place between January and August 2020 following the successful Boiler Refit Appeal in 2019 which raised £2.3m in just seven months.

This new publication tells the story of the appeal and the boiler refit which returned Waverley to steam. With over 160 images, many of which have never been shared with the public before, all aspects of the refit are documented as a record of the work undertaken to “Save The Waverley”.
